Colorado Springs, CO — Every year, thousands of children across the nation write and send letters to Santa at Christmastime. Whether everyone believes in Santa or not, these kids certainly do, and the United States Postal Service has been working hard for over 100 years to make sure that presents “from Santa” are delivered to these children in need by December 25th. A local Colorado Springs shipping store is sharing the history of “Operation Santa” and how it is still going strong in 2021!

According to USPS, “Operation Santa started more than 109 years ago when the Postal Service began receiving letters to Santa from kids across the country. However, until 1912, Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock authorized local Postmasters to allow postal employees and customers to respond to the letters. That simple act of kindness has led to a very successful holiday program benefitting deserving kids and families throughout the United States.”

The process is simple. Children write a letter (on or after November 1st) to Santa telling him what they want for Christmas, their parents put said letter in an envelope that includes their name and their full return address, add a First-Class Mail Forever stamp, and send it (must be postmarked before/on December 10th) to Santa at his workshop address 123 Elf Road, North Pole, 88888. It is important to note that not all letters mailed to Santa will be “adopted,” so parents are encouraged to double-check that the letters are sent correctly and as soon as possible during the holiday season.

The letters are then sorted out by individuals or families, scanned (address and personal info are removed for security purposes), and then posted to uspsoperationsanta.com. Generous individuals or businesses create an account, request verification through USPS, “adopt” a letter(s), find the perfect gift(s), and ship them at a participating USPS location (before/on December 19th). Finally, the gifts will arrive addressed from Santa, and the children will experience the magic of the season!
